End of life: the text opening the “right to assisted dying” adopted by the deputies

"I will never forget this day," said Olivier Fallorni, rapporteur of the law creating a "right to assisted dying," in his emotional speech after the adoption of the bill in the National Assembly on May 27, 2025. The Chamber approved the text at first reading on Tuesday , allowing this major societal reform, in gestation for several years, to take a decisive step. Out of 504 votes cast, 305 deputies voted for and 199 against the reform, which will be implemented in 2022.
Health Minister Catherine Vautrin hopes that it can be ratified before the 2027 presidential election. Just before, MPs also approved a text strengthening palliative care, this time unanimously . Both texts will now be sent back to the Senate for examination "in the autumn" .
